Reactive maintenance feels cheaper until a failed recorder during an investigation or a chiller fault on the hottest day of the year. Preventive programs convert surprise into schedule — and budget.
The hidden cost of break-fix
Break-fix contracts respond to failure; they rarely prevent it. Operators inherit overtime, expedited freight and reputational damage. A single overnight VMS outage can exceed a year of structured preventive visits.
What a good AMC includes
- Health baselines: Device inventory with firmware, serial and warranty status.
- Scheduled visits: Lens cleaning, battery tests, disk checks and failover drills.
- Trend reporting: Month-over-month alarm noise, offline cameras and patch compliance.
Align AMC to risk, not uniform schedules
Not every device needs quarterly attention. Tier assets: critical path recorders and access controllers monthly; peripheral sensors semi-annually. Spend where failure hurts most.
Integrate monitoring with maintenance
When NOC sees recurring offline cameras, open a preventive ticket before the client notices. Closing the loop between watch and wrench is where uptime gains compound.
Build AMC at design stage
Spares lists, remote access methods and training refresh should be in the tender — not negotiated after handover when budgets are spent.
